Career transitions can be surprising, for regular adults as well as those in the public eye. In the world of celebrity, it’s common to see singers transition to acting, actors transition to directing, and all of the above become philanthropists on the side. One particularly strange celebrity career transition? Chuck Woolery, a former game show host, now hosts a right-wing podcast called “Blunt Force Truth.”
Once a host, always a host, I guess. Even so, Woolery’s new(ish) gig may be surprising to those who knew him on “Love Connection” back in the day. At age 75, though, what’s less surprising is his political affiliation. After all, Woolery appeared on Fox News in support of the conservative presidential tick, namely now-Vice President Mike Pence.
Still, Woolery can certainly be considered an outlier in the entertainment industry. “Blunt Force Truth” has been around since late 2014, rose at the time to the Top 10 on the podcast charts. He co-hosts it with his like-minded friend Mark Young, 59. Episodes, an hour long each, are released every Tuesday.
According to a report by the New York Times, Woolery and Young met when the former filmed a commercial for the latter’s ad agency, Jekyll and Hyde, in 1998. Both Christians and conservatives, the two became fast friends. The idea for the podcast arose just before the presidential election in 2012 during a motorcycle tryst in Michigan, where Young lives. Prior, Woolery had kept his political beliefs largely to himself, fearing retribution from liberal Hollywood.
Woolery swallowed his fears and went ahead with the podcast anyway. His fears weren’t entirely unjustified: since the 2016 election, it’s harder for the left to write off Woolery and Young as right-wing cranks. Still, the podcast provides a sometimes cringeworthy, other times refreshing change of pace in an industry that is generally — and to its own detriment, at times — ideologically homogeneous.
As far as unusual transitions go, Woolery’s is one for the books. But the more you consider Woolery an individual and his strength of personality, the less strange it seems. Whether or not you agree with him, he’s found a calling that may really be a love connection.
